I hope you’re well and that you’re getting excited for the holiday season. Today we will continue the series Women in the Bible. We previously studied about Abigail, Mary and Jezebel. Today we’ll talk about Hannah, her story can be found in the Old Testament, in the book of 1 Samuel (1&2). Hannah means “Gracious/God has favoured me”.

Hannah was married to was Elkanah which had had two wives: Hannah & Peninnah, they all lived in Ramathaim near Shiloh. Hannah was Elkanah’s favourite despite the fact that they didn’t have any children. She desperately desired a child but could not conceive as a result Peninnah (which had children) kept provoking her for her infertility till she wept and would not eat.

“Her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat” 1 Samuel 1:7

J’espère que vous allez bien et que vous êtes excitées pour les fêtes. Aujourd’hui nous allons continuer la série Women in the Bible, nous avons déjà étudié Abigaïl, Marie et Jézabel. Aujourd’hui, nous allons parler d’Hanna, son histoire peut être trouvée dans l’Ancien Testament, dans le livre de 1 Samuel (1 & 2). Hanna signifie «Grâce/Dieu m’a fait grâce».

Hanna était mariée à Elkana qui avait deux femmes: Anne et Peninna et ils vivaient à Ramathaïm-Tsophim près  de Silo. Anne était la favorite d’Elkana malgré le fait qu’ils n’avaient pas d’enfants. Elle désirait désespérément un enfant mais ne pouvait pas concevoir, du coup Peninna (qui avait des enfants) ne cessait de la provoquer pour son infertilité jusqu’à ce qu’elle pleure et ne mange pas.

«Peninna la provoquait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait pas» 1 Samuel 1:7

Hannah went to the house of lord to cried out to God about her situation. She promised the Lord that if He would give her a son, she would dedicate him to God as a Nazirite (Vow taken by individuals who voluntarily want to dedicate themselves to God).

“In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” 1 Samuel 1:10-11

Anne alla à la maison de l’Éternel et s’écria à Dieu au sujet de sa situation. Elle a promis au Seigneur que s’il lui donnait un fils, elle le consacrerait à Dieu en tant que Naziréen (Voeux pris par des individus qui veulent volontairement se consacrer à Dieu).

«L’amertume dans l’âme, elle pria l’Eternel et pleura abondamment. Elle fit le voeu suivant: «Eternel, maître de l’univers, si tu consens à regarder la détresse de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi, si tu n’oublies pas ta servante et lui donnes un fils, je le consacrerai à l’Eternel pour toute la durée de sa vie et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.» 1 Samuel 1:10-11

Eli the priest of the Lord’s house in Shiloh was sitting on his chair by the doorpost, he heard Hannah weeping her lips were moving but her voice was not heard, so he thought she was drunk and he questioned her. She replied:

“Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief. Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him” 1 Samuel 1:15-17

Eli, le prêtre de la maison de l’Éternel à Silo, était assis sur sa chaise près de l’entrée, il entendit Anne pleurer, ses lèvres bougeaient mais on n’entendait pas sa voix, alors il pensait qu’elle était ivre et il l’interrogea. Elle répondit:

«Anne répondit: «Ce n’est pas cela, mon seigneur. Je suis une femme à l’esprit abattu, je n’ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante, mais j’épanchais mon coeur devant l’Eternel. Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme légère, car c’est le trop-plein de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m’a fait parler jusqu’à présent.» Eli reprit la parole et dit: «Pars en paix et que le Dieu d’Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée!» 1 Samuel 1:15-17

So the next morning:

“Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.” (Samuel means God heard) 1 Samuel 1:19-20

“When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.” (Samuel signifie exaucé de Dieu) 1 Samuel 21:22

Le lendemain matin:

«Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, après avoir adoré l’Eternel, ils partirent et retournèrent chez eux à Rama. Elkana eut des relations conjugales avec Anne, sa femme, et l’Eternel se souvint d’elle. Dans le cours de l’année, Anne devint enceinte et elle mit au monde un fils qu’elle appela Samuel, car, dit-elle, «je l’ai demandé à l’Eternel» 1 Samuel 1:19-20

«Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa famille offrir à l’Eternel le sacrifice annuel et accomplir son voeu. Mais Anne ne monta pas à Silo. Elle dit à son mari: «Lorsque l’enfant sera sevré, je l’y conduirai afin qu’il soit présenté devant l’Eternel et qu’il reste là pour toujours.» 1 Samuel 1:21-22

Then when the time came, she took the boy to Shiloh and gave him to Eli, the priest of the house of the Lord.

“After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,  and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:24-28

«Quand elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à Silo. Elle prit 3 taureaux, 22 litres de farine et une outre de vin. Elle conduisit l’enfant à la maison de l’Eternel à Silo alors qu’il était encore tout jeune. Ils égorgèrent les taureaux et conduisirent l’enfant à Eli. Anne dit: «Mon seigneur, pardon, aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, c’est moi qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l’Eternel. C’était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l’Eternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais. Aussi, je veux le prêter à l’Eternel; il sera toute sa vie prêté à l’Eternel.» Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l’Eternel.» 1 Samuel 1:24-28

Then Hannah spoke a beautiful prayer, you can read it in 1 Samuel 2:1-10. Samuel grew up to be a great man of God. After Samuel, Eli announced another blessing on Hannah and the couple had three more sons and two daughters making it 6 children in total (2 Samuel 2:21).

Ensuite Anne fit une belle prière, vous pouvez la lire dans 1 Samuel 2:1-10. Samuel grandi pour être un grand homme de Dieu. Après Samuel, Après Samuel, Eli a annonca une autre bénédiction sur Anne, le couple eu trois autres fils et deux filles, ce qui fait 6 enfants au total (2 Samuel 2:21).

What can we learn from this ?

• Graceful & kind: Penninah was mean to her but responded with grace or didn’t respond at all
• Prayer warrior (Supplication): She cried out to God, and asked for a son. God answers the prayers of those who pray “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” Matthew 7:7
• Faithful: She made a vow and honoured her promise. After Samuel was born she gave him to Eli, as a result he grew in the House of the Lord.
• Worshiper: Even though she was leaving her son at the temple, her heart rejoiced in God.
• Devoted mother: She waited to wean Samuel before bringing him to Eli.
• Brave & courageous: She gave her son away, knowing that she wouldn’t raise him/watch him grow.
• Worshipper and grateful: Hannah was a devout worshipper. Hannah’s psalm of thanksgiving (1 Samuel 2:1-10)
• Humble: She spoke of herself as a God’s servant (1 Samuel 1:18)

Quelle leçon pouvons-nous en tirer ?

• Gracieuse & gentille: Pennina était méchant avec elle, mais répondait avec grâce ou ne répondait pas du tout
• Combattante de la prière (Supplication): Elle parti pleurer auprès Dieu et demanda un fils. Dieu répond aux prières de ceux qui prient «Demandez, et l’on vous donnera; cherchez, et vous trouverez; frappez, et l’on vous ouvrira» Matthieu 7: 7
• Fidèle: Elle fit un vœu et honora sa promesse. Après la naissance de Samuel, elle le donna à Eli et il grandit dans la Maison du Seigneur.
• Adoratrice: Malgré le fait qu’elle laissa son fils au temple, son cœur se réjouissait en Dieu.
• Mère dévouée: Elle attendit de sevrer Samuel avant de l’emmener à Eli.
• Courageuse & brave: Elle donna son fils, sachant qu’elle ne pourra pas l’élever ni le voir grandir
• Adoratrice & reconnaissante: Anne était une adoratrice pieuse. Prière d’action de grâce d’Anne  (1 Samuel 2: 1-10)
• Humble: Elle parle d’elle-même comme servante de Dieu (1 Samuel 1:18)
