Today we will continue our study of the various “Women in the Bible“, in the previous posts we studied Abigail, Mary, Jezebel, Hannah, Sarah and Tamar. The woman of the day is Ruth, her story can be found in the Old Testament in the book of Ruth. Ruth means “friend”, she wasn’t an Israelite but a Moabite, Moabites descended from Moab. Moab was Loth’s son (Abraham’s nephew), he was born of incest with Loth’s eldest daughter (Genesis 19:30-37). Moabites had their own idols and gods therefore they did not worship the God of Israel.

Aujourd’hui nous allons continuer notre étude des differentes femmes de la Bible «Women in the Bible» avec Ruth. Auparavant nous avions déjà étudié Abigaïl, Marie, Jézabel, Anne, Sara et Tamar. L’histoire de Ruth se trouve dans l’Ancien Testament dans le livre de Ruth. Son nom signifie «compagne», Ruth n’était pas Israélite mais Moabite, Moabites sont des descendants de Moab. Moab était le fruit d’inceste que Loth (Neveu d’Abraham) a eu avec sa fille ainée (Genèse 19:30-37). Les Moabites avaient leurs idoles et des dieux donc ils n’adoraient pas le Dieu d’Israël.

 

Elimelek, his wife Naomi and their two sons Mahlon and Kilion left Bethlehem because there was famine in the land to live in Moab. “They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.” Ruth 1:3-5

Elimélec, sa femme Naomi et leurs deux fils Machlon et Kiljon quittèrent Bethléem  pour aller vivre à Moab car il y avait une famine dans le pays. «Elimélec, le mari de Naomi, mourut et elle resta avec ses deux fils. Ils prirent des femmes moabites – l’une s’appelait Orpa et l’autre Ruth et ils habitèrent là environ 10 ans. Machlon et Kiljon moururent aussi tous les deux et Naomi resta privée de ses deux fils et de son mari.» Ruth 1:3-5

 

When Naomi heard that the Lord had been provided food back home, she decided to go back to Bethlehem in Judah and told Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab and find new husbands.

“When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

“Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. May the Lord grant that each of you will find restin the home of another husband.” Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.” Ruth 1:6-10

Lorsque Naomi entendit que la famine était terminée dans le pays de Juda, elle décida de retourner à Bethléem. Elle dit à Orpa et Ruth de rester à Moab et de trouver de nouveaux maris.

«En effet, elle y avait appris que l’Eternel était intervenu en faveur de son peuple et lui avait donné du pain. Elle partit de l’endroit où elle habitait, accompagnée de ses deux belles-filles, et elle se mit en route pour retourner dans le pays de Juda.

Naomi dit à ses deux belles-filles: «Allez-y, retournez chacune dans la famille de votre mère! Que l’Eternel agisse avec bonté envers vous, comme vous l’avez fait envers ceux qui sont morts et envers moi! Que l’Eternel fasse trouver à chacune du repos dans la maison d’un mari!» Puis elle les embrassa. Elles se mirent à pleurer tout haut et lui dirent: «Non, nous irons avec toi vers ton peuple.» Ruth 1:6-10

 

Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye but Ruth refused to go, then Naomi said “Look, your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.” 

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” 

When Naomi realised that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. Ruth 1:15-18

Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère et lui dit au revoir mais Ruth refusa de partir, puis Naomi lui dit «Tu vois, ta belle-soeur est retournée vers son peuple et vers ses dieux; retourne chez toi comme elle!»

Ruth répondit: «Ne me pousse pas à te laisser, à repartir loin de toi! Où tu iras j’irai, où tu habiteras j’habiterai; ton peuple sera mon peuple et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu; où tu mourras je mourrai et j’y serai enterrée. Que l’Eternel me traite avec la plus grande sévérité si autre chose que la mort me sépare de toi!» 

«La voyant décidée à l’accompagner, Naomi cessa d’insister auprès d’elle.» Ruth 1:15-18

In Bethlehem, Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side named Boaz. Ruth decided to go into the fields during the barley harvest to pick up leftover grains, the field she was working in belonged to Boaz. When Boaz heard that Ruth was a Moabite who came with Naomi he was moved.

“So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”

At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”

Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord,the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” Ruth 2:8-12

Then Boaz offered her some food and drink, he also gave orders to his men: “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.” Ruth 2:16

À Bethléem, Naomi avait de la famille du côté de son mari appelé Boaz. Ruth décida d’aller dans les champs pendant la récolte d’orge pour ramasser les restes de céréales. Le champ dans lequel elle travaillait appartenait à Boaz. Quand Boaz apprit que Ruth était une Moabite venue avec Naomi, il fut ému.

«Boaz dit à Ruth: «Ecoute, ma fille, ne va pas ramasser des épis dans un autre champ; ne t’éloigne pas d’ici, reste avec mes servantes. Regarde où l’on moissonne dans le champ et va après elles. J’ai défendu à mes serviteurs de te toucher. Quand tu auras soif, tu iras aux vases et tu boiras de ce que les serviteurs auront puisé.»

Alors elle tomba le visage contre terre, se prosterna et lui dit: «Comment ai-je trouvé grâce à tes yeux pour que tu t’intéresses à moi, une étrangère?»

Boaz lui répondit: «On m’a rapporté tout ce que tu as fait pour ta belle-mère depuis la mort de ton mari et comment tu as quitté ton père et ta mère et le pays de ta naissance pour aller vers un peuple que tu ne connaissais pas auparavant. Que l’Eternel te rende ce que tu as fait et que ta récompense soit entière de la part de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, sous les ailes duquel tu es venue te réfugier!» Ruth 2:8-12

Alors Boaz lui donna à manger et à boire, et donna également des ordres à ses serviteurs: «Qu’elle ramasse aussi des épis entre les gerbes et ne lui faites aucun mal. Vous retirerez même pour elle des gerbes quelques épis que vous la laisserez ramasser sans lui faire de reproches.» Ruth 2:16

 

Ruth worked very hard in the fields to provide enough barley to sell and to keep some for her and Naomi. After the harvest, she went back home and told everything that had happened to Naomi. That she was working at the fields of a man named Boaz and how he was being so kind to her. Then Naomi encouraged Ruth to wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in her best clothes to meet Boaz on the threshing floor. Ruth 3:2

Ruth did exactly was Naomi told her to do and approached Boaz in the middle of the night and lay at his feet.

“ In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet! “Who are you?” he asked.

“I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.”

The Lord bless you, my daughter,” he replied. “This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor. And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character. Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is more closely related than I. Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it. Lie here until morning.” Ruth 3:8-13

Ruth travaillait très dur dans les champs pour fournir assez d’orge à vendre et en garder pour elle et Naomi. Après la récolte, elle rentra chez et dit tout à Naomi, qu’elle travaillait dans les champs d’un homme appelé Boaz et qu’il était gentil avec elle. Puis Naomi encouragea Ruth à se laver, à mettre du parfum et à s’habiller de ses meilleurs vêtements pour rencontrer Boaz sur l’aire de battage. Ruth 3:2

Ruth fit exactement ce que Naomi lui avait dit de faire et s’approcha de Boaz au milieu de la nuit et s’allongea à ses pieds.

«Au milieu de la nuit, Boaz eut un frisson; il se pencha et vit une femme couchée à ses pieds. Il dit: «Qui es-tu?»

Elle répondit: «Je suis Ruth, ta servante. Etends le pan de ton manteau sur ta servante, car tu as droit de rachat.»

Il dit: «Sois bénie de l’Eternel, ma fille! Ce dernier trait témoigne encore plus en ta faveur que le premier, car tu n’as pas recherché des jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches. Maintenant, ma fille, n’aie pas peur! Je ferai pour toi tout ce que tu diras, car tout le monde chez nous sait que tu es une femme de valeur. Il est bien vrai que j’ai droit de rachat, mais il existe un autre parent, plus proche que moi, qui a ce droit. Passe la nuit ici. Demain, s’il veut exercer envers toi son droit de rachat, c’est bien, qu’il le fasse; mais s’il ne lui plaît pas de l’exercer envers toi, je le ferai, moi, l’Eternel est vivant! Reste couchée jusqu’au matin.» Ruth 3:8-13

 

Before leaving for town, Boaz gave Ruth six measures of barley, then she came to her mother-in-law, told her everything Boaz had done for her.

In town, Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said to the guardian-redeemer that Naomi was selling the piece of land that belonged to Elimelek, as the guardian-redeemer he was first in line to redeem it and Boaz was second. Then Boaz reminded him that if he buys the land he would also have to acquire Ruth the Moabite in order to maintain the name of Elimelek with his property. The guardian-redeemer refused to do so and offered Boaz to buy the property instead. Ruth 4:1-8

“Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnessesthat I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”” Ruth 4:9-10

Avant de partir pour la ville, Boaz donna à Ruth six mesures d’orge, puis elle alla trouver sa belle-mère, Naomi et lui raconta tout ce que Boaz avait fait pour elle.

En ville, Boaz prit dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville puis il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat que Naomi vendait une parcelle qui appartenait à Elimélec, comme il avait le droit de rachat, il était en première ligne pour racheter la parcelle et Boaz était après lui. Alors Boaz lui a rappela que s’il achètait la parcelle, il devra également acquérir Ruth la Moabite afin de maintenir le nom d’Elimélec sur son héritage. Celui qui avait le droit de rachat refusa de le faire et proposa à Boaz de racheter la propriété. Ruth 4:1-8

«Alors Boaz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple: «Vous êtes témoins aujourd’hui que j’ai acquis de la main de Naomi tout ce qui appartenait à Elimélec, à Kiljon et à Machlon, et que j’ai également acquis pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Machlon, pour maintenir le nom du défunt sur son héritage afin qu’il ne disparaisse pas parmi ses frères ni à la porte de sa ville. Vous en êtes témoins aujourd’hui!» Ruth 4:9-10

 

Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. He made love to her, and the Lord enabled her to conceive. She gave birth to a son named Obed. “The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”” Ruth 4:13-15

“Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David” Ruth 4:16-17

Obed was the grand-father of David whose genealogy would come our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Boaz épousa Ruth; elle devint sa femme et il coucha avec elle. L’Eternel permit à Ruth de devenir enceinte et elle mit au monde un fils appelé Obed.
«Les femmes dirent à Naomi: «Béni soit l’Eternel qui ne t’a pas laissée manquer aujourd’hui d’une personne ayant le droit de rachat! Que son nom soit célébré en Israël! Cet enfant sera ton réconfort et le soutien de ta vieillesse, car ta belle-fille qui t’aime l’a mis au monde, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils.» Ruth 4:13-15

«Naomi prit l’enfant, le serra sur sa poitrine et l’éleva. Les voisines lui donnèrent un nom en disant: «Un fils est né à Naomi», et elles l’appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d’Isaï, père de David.» Ruth 4:16-17

Obed était le grand-père de David, la lignée dont viendra par la suite notre Sauveur Jésus-Christ.

Pérets eut pour fils Hetsron,

Hetsron eut Ram,

Ram eut Amminadab,

Amminadab eut pour fils Nachshon,

Nachshon eut Salmon,

Salmon eut pour fils Boaz,

Boaz eut Obed, (Fils de Ruth)

Obed eut pour fils Isaï

et Isaï eut David.»

Ruth 4:18-22

 

So what can we learn from this?

• Loyal & committed: To Naomi. Not only she married Mahlon, she embraced his whole family and stayed loyal to her mother in law after her husband had died
• Faith: She wasn’t an Israelite but she chose to convert and follow Naomi’s (and her husband’s) religion vs 1:16
• Big-hearted: Everything she did was for Naomi and her (They lived together, bought food for them both etc.)
• Hard-working: She worked hard in the fields when they came to Bethlehem
• Courageous: She left her home and her family to go to a new place (Moab -> Bethlehem)
• Respectful: To Naomi and Boaz . This is how Boaz saw her worth vs 3:11
• Chosen: Whatever your religion or your past, if God has put His hand on you, nothing can stop His anointing (She was the great grand-mother of King David)

 

Quelle leçon pouvons-nous retenir ? 

• Loyale & dévouée: Envers Naomi. Lorsqu’elle épousa Machlon, elle adopta toute sa famille et resta fidèle à sa belle-mère malgré la mort de son mari
• Foi: Elle n’était pas Israélite mais prit la décision de se convertir et de suivre la religion de Naomi (et celle de son marie) vs 1:16
• Au grand coeur: Tout ce qu’elle faisait était pour Naomi et elle (Elles vivaient ensemble, elle ramenait de la nourriture pour les deux, etc.)
• Travailleuse: Elle travaillait dur dans les champs lorsqu’elles sont venues à Bethléem
• Courageuse: Elle quitta sa maison et sa famille pour aller dans un lieux qu’elle ne connaissait pas (Moab -> Bethléem)
• Respectueuse: Envers Naomi et Boaz. C’est ainsi que Boaz vit sa valeur vs 3:11
• Choisie: Quelle que soit votre religion ou votre passé, si Dieu a mis Sa main sur vous, rien ne peut arrêter Son onction (Elle était l’arrière grand-mère du Roi David)
